Anna K. Tarot
By Anna Klaffinger
The Anna K. tarot remains a favourite among Tarotists, even years after its publication. Waite-like in structure and Coleman-similar in imagery, Anna adds a unique artistic realism to her images. The facial expressions on her characters, for example on the young woman depicted in the Ace of Wands as she balances across a wand bridging one cliff to another, speak so poignantly and appropriately to the card’s meaning. All of her Aces depict a young character involved in an activity which accurately represents the element of the suit.
Characterization is certainly Anna’s strength as an artist. The setting appears to be the middle-ages whereby simple outfits and foot attire with muted colours prevail throughout most of the depictions of the characters. This is a painted deck which I favour as well over decks which have been digitally created.
The Anna K. Tarot is a great deck for the beginner reader. The imagery fosters great story telling due to her depiction of the characters and their actions. All Anna’s imagery triggers emotions which are vital to a feeling of connectness to any tarot deck.
The deck is size is smaller than average but uncluttered with borders. The colours are defined but muted. I highly recommend this deck.
